As part of the activities during the Primary Healthcare Collaborative Initiative with Iloro Community, a health fair was held on the 16th of May, 2019 at the Iloro Primary Health Centre (PHC) Agege LGA, Lagos State. The health fair was aimed at inspiring healthy lifestyle changes among st participants as well as ensuring residents utilize the PHC as the first point of call in their health needs. It had in attendance a total of 141 patients: 107 female, 30 male and 4 children.
Prior this initiative, the PHC which was created 18 years ago had been underutilized as a result of rundown or lack of equipment, shortage of personnel and low socio-economic status of residents in the community. In three years, Oshunluyi Foundation has helped to replace and repair rundown equipment, provided supplies and organized two (2) health fairs which enabled resident’s access to free healthcare and medication.
Observations
- Majority of those diagnosed with High Blood Pressure were women between 18 -60 years and had not seen a primary health provider in years.
- 80% of patients did not take any medication after they ran out of the supply provided during the health fair.
- There was a decrease in the number of patients who had Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure compared to previous Health fair.
- It was also noticed that people now utilize the PHC as the first point of care.
Recommendations
- Creation of Hypertension/Diabetes Clinics in PHC which would be directed by 2 Registered nurses. They will be required to work for four (4) hours twice a month.
- Provision of resources to the PHC
